English (Writing), Latin, SAT, GRE, Social Stud... Tutor in Philadelphia, PA

Tutor Profile

Gender:
Male

Preferred Subjects

English (Writing), Latin, SAT, GRE, Social Studies, History, Study Skills/Organization, Geography

Education

Saint Joseph's University, 2007. B.A. (summa cum laude), Latin. 3.9 GPA.

Currently a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania pursuing my Ph.D.

Experience:

I have taught undergraduate level history courses and tutored high school Latin. My grasp of Greek and Latin not only qualifies me to teach these course - from the elementary levels to advanced - but has also given me great experience writing, reading, and grading exams so I can teach skills related to reading, writing, and building arguments.

I have been successful on standardized testing, with a 5 on AP English Composition, 4 on AP US History, 710 Verbal/720 Math (5.5 Writing) on the GRE. I truly love the time I spend teaching.
III. Why I Want to be a Tutor
I am looking for an enriching summer experience that will allow me to use the knowledge I've been fortunate enough through all my educational experiences to help others achieve their academic goals. I want to teach Biology and Latin because I am very passionate about both subjects.

Hobbies:

Personality/Teaching Style: I'm a very outgoing person. I am a creative thinker, but am still very logical and methodical. When teaching, I try to account for the fact that everyone learns differently. This includes how they remember facts, understand material, and the speed at which they learn. Such an approach requires a great deal of patience and flexibility on my part, but I am quite capable of doing this. I believe that good educators enable students to do more than just memorize facts, that they should teach them to be able to apply their knowledge in order to gain a better understanding of what they are learning.

I can juggle
I love to sculpt
I am a vegetarian

Of course, I am also interested in earning money to help with Vet School tuition. Contact me for a full CV including publications and awards.

Hobbies:

I like to go to the park with my dog, cook, read, and spend time with my friends.
I am a pretty laid back person and want to make the learning experience interesting--NOT frustrating. I really believe that this is the most effective way to retain, integrate, and apply novel information.
I live in Center City and do not have a car, so I am willing to travel to places that are easily accessible by public transportation but prefer to work in Center City or University City.

Hourly Rate:
$40.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Mon/Wed/Fri after 5PM
Weekends in the afternoon

Lives Near:
19103 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor

I have taught survey level courses in art history at the university level for 5 years, including western art from ancient to contemporary, Pre-Columbian, and African. Most of the students in my classes were non-majors and I've been adept at coming up with strategies to keep them engaged with the material. I've worked as a tutor in the Writing Center at the University of Maryland, helping students from across campus with all types of papers and assignments, from English to History to Biology. I have also tutored private clients in preparing essays for college and graduate school admissions and entrance exams. I've worked with students from diverse backgrounds and am an ideal tutor for anyone needing extra help with English or History classes or with admissions essays.

Hobbies:

Visiting museums of course, reading about art, horseback riding in my spare time, and cooking are my main interests. I love to travel, which helped me decide on art history as my major field.

Hourly Rate:
$45.00/hr

Available Days/Times:
Weekdays after 5PM
Weekends at any time

Lives Near:
19130 zip code

Click here to contact this tutor
