Experience
I have 13 years of classroom teaching experience as a high school English teacher. I spent 10 of those 13 years teaching at a specialized high school in New York City. I have experience teaching all four high school grades, with a recent focus on 11th and 12th grade. While teaching at the specialized high school, I developed and taught a science fiction and fantasy literature class for 12th graders. This course focused on literary analysis and college-level writing, while also exploring the creative influences of science fiction and fantasy literature. Many of the students at my school were STEM focused and this course became the most popular English course to take, partially because it appealed to their strengths and interests. As a result, my students were highly engaged and, for many, enjoyed reading books for class for the first time in their high school careers. I also have 8 years of experience with the college essay, teaching 11th and 12th grade students how to craft admissions essays and how to perfect them. Many of my students went on to top-tier colleges and universities. For some of them, their college essay is what tipped the scales for their admission. I am taking a year off from classroom teaching to care for my family and adjust to living in a new city. I am interested in tutoring to keep up with my teaching - but on a more flexible schedule and with a reduced student load - and to contribute to my household earnings.

Hobbies
I love science fiction and fantasy stories and, while I am not a writer, I am a reader and consumer of these stories. I confess I do not know much about - nor am particularly interested in - the superhero universes but am willing to learn from someone who passionate about them. I prefer Star Trek over Star Wars but have cultural fluency in both. I sing in Philadelphia's Mendelssohn Chorus and have a deep love of music. I enjoy listening to an eclectic variety of music, both instrumental and with lyrics. While I don't have in knowledge of hiphop and rap artists, I can make up for this with appreciation for their art. I enjoy science and the natural world. I love spending time out of doors - walking, hiking, long-distance biking, and generally appreciating nature.
