Experience
I have an extensive tutoring background in face-to-face and online environments with a focus on small-group and solo experiences, international students, and creative and hard-to-reach young people. I love working with students and families to craft unique educational experiences: along with enjoying a range of tutoring relationships, I've taught art history and museum studies courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, organized general-interest and profession-specific cultural tours, and created one-off private events that meld entertainment and learning. Due in part to a background in the history of computing and in part to a great respect for the value of interdisciplinary work, I am expert in melding art and technology together as part of STEAM-oriented learning experiences such as 3D printing-based art camps and geolocation-based participatory public art projects. Along with teaching and tutoring, my professional background includes the development of internationally recognized exhibitions and publications, the collaborative development of museums and art centers, the commissioning of dozens of artist- and community-led projects, and, overall, a constant search for ways to integrate teaching and learning, students and experts, and theory and practice to the benefit of all concerned. **To address an important issue head-on, COVID-19 has forced institutions and individuals to innovate new ways to meaningfully connect, and, while the toll of the pandemic is unspeakable, we may find ourselves better able to understand and share with others as new channels of communication are explored and perfected. I know that the occasionally surprising intensity of online performances, readings, and other events has inspired me to "raise my own game!"

Hobbies
I'm lucky that my vocation is my avocation: I devote a lot of time and energy, frequently with members of my family, attending museums, historic sites, cultural events, etc. Family is important to me: we frequently travel for competitions and other events our children are involved in...and if a nearby museum or roadside attraction that I've arrange for us to pass by happens to look interesting it's more than likely that we'll pay a visit. I have traveled to 14 countries on five continents and am a strong believer in the value of getting outside of your comfort zone in order to learn about yourself and about the world around you. Also, I have been a devoted road cyclist for decades -- I have ridden (solo and in groups) in urban and rural settings in Scotland, New England, the Mid-West, the Pacific Northwest, and the Mid-Atlantic states -- and I continue to ride, year-round, in and around Philadelphia.
