Education

Graduated from Arcadia University in May of 2013. 3.78 GPA, Departmental Honors. B.A. in Scientific Illustration and B.S. in Mathematics.

Experience

I am a botanical illustrator and mathematician. With that unusual combination, I've spent a lot of my life explaining math to art people and art to math people. The stereotype that artists don't do math well doesn't apply to me, but it has given me a lot of experience in finding new ways to explain and teach math for people who think differently. This is especially useful for students who don't like math or are having trouble in the transitional math subjects like algebra, geometry, and trigonometry. This carries over to the sciences, especially chemistry, which is heavily algebra-based. I have a B.S. in Mathematics and I tend toward more rule-based and algebraic math. I can tutor for any middle to lower level college math classes and any high school math classes, except statistics, which is not my cup of tea. My B.A. came with heavy coursework in biology and some in chemistry and botany. I love all kinds of science, including physics and chemistry. This wide range of knowledge lets me draw on many examples and modes of thinking, so that I can connect concepts for my students. Many times, all a student needs to solve a problem or understand a concept is the right way to think about it. As an artist, I paint with acrylic and watercolor paints. I draw with pen and ink, graphite, and charcoal. I work digitally and can tutor the use of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. I am a professional artist with a B.A. in Scientific Illustration. I teach workshops and sell my art. I have spent plenty of time learning and analyzing the different parts and pieces of an image, from anatomy to composition to color, and can easily teach and critique. I prefer to tutor in person in one or two hour blocks. I find that most students start to lose focus after about two hours, and also that tutoring in person is more effective. I am willing to travel up to half an hour to my students. Potential students who are farther away are welcome to meet me halfway.
