Experience

My teaching philosophy: I've always been drawn to the rewards and challenges of teaching tutoring. Each position throughout my career has contained an element of teaching—a skill that needs continuous refinement in order to address diverse learning environments. I first faced this challenge as a high school science teacher where I presented material using various techniques focused on addressing students’ different learning styles. Being aware of different learning types is only one part of being a good tutor. One must also possess good listening skills and the ability to gauge student progress; the ability to balance a flexible teaching style and open door policy with the discipline to maintain structure within the classroom; and the ability to synthesize various learning styles to most effectively present the material. Moreover, tutoring science (or any subject) is more than presenting information to students, it is about providing them with the tools to think critically and to effectively analyze given information. The role of the tutor is to provide a learning environment that facilitates freethinking and encourages questions more than a necessity for answers. A tutor offers guidance for students, is a mentor and takes an active role in the student’s learning progression. If provided the right tools, studying any area of science is possible for any student. I believe in the Socratic method for teaching science as it encourages critical thinking and promotes productive class discussion. The Socratic method becomes especially important when teaching environmental management and environmental policy because these are areas that have complicated questions requiring critical thinking skills for effective decision making.
