Education

I have a BA from Temple University in French with a minor in Sociology. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with distinction in the major. When I graduated, I worked as a volunteer French and English teacher in Senegal, West Africa. I returned to the US to pursue my doctorate in Sociology. I am still working on my dissertation, but have already earned a Master's degree with distinction.

Experience

My passion for teaching stems from my life-long love of learning. As a formerly homeschooled student, I often take an unconventional and creative approach to education. I believe that all students can succeed, but that the classroom environment or other factors can impede that success. As a tutor, my job is not only to teach new subject matter, but to teach each student how he/she best learns. My approach is to be gentle, encouraging, and creative, yet also challenging. The greatest compliments I receive are when former students tell me that the subject they learned with me is now their favorite. I have worked with several families who homeschool their children, helping navigate the state requirements, teaching high school French, English language and composition, doing SAT/ACT prep, and teaching social studies. I have also worked for families whose children attend public school, helping students with difficult homework in elementary reading, math, social studies, and science. This has included work with elementary aged students with special needs. My classroom teaching experience has been in higher education as a Sociology professor and instructor of Writing and Critical Analysis. I have also tutored adult ESL learners. I learned French growing up and majored in it at Temple University. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with distinction in the major. I studied abroad in France twice and taught French and English in Senegal, West Africa after graduating. Not only do I know the language well, but I also know how difficult it is to learn another language. I come up with unique ways to teach grammar and vocabulary. The ability to write well is arguably the most important skill for success in life. To write well, students must learn to read well. The two skills go hand in hand; therefore, my approach to teaching one is to combine both. I am adept at teaching students how to improve locally (grammar, sentence structure, paragraph formation), as well as globally (flow, organization, argumentation). Students very quickly see dramatic improvements in both their writing and reading abilities. I have a Master's degree in Sociology and am working toward my Ph.D. History, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science are all fields that are endlessly fascinating to me. I bring this passion with me when teaching these subjects. Most recently, I have taught 9th grade social studies to a homeschooled student. We did a geography "tour of the world," doing a map based overview of world history and current events. The culminating project was that she drew an entire world map with countries, capital cities, and major bodies of water entirely from memory. She used to hate social studies, but it is now her favorite subject! I am a passionate, skilled, and caring tutor. Working one on one or in small groups is what energizes me and motivates me to continue improving. I look forward to hearing from you and figuring out how I can be part of your future success!
