Education

I graduated from Old Dominion University in Virginia with a B.A. in English and an emphasis on secondary education. I have also taken graduate level courses at the University of Virginia and have participated in many professional development courses and workshops for educators, including AP training. I am a lifelong learner who is dedicated to learning new approaches and strategies for helping students grow.

Experience

As an English Language Arts teacher for the past ten years, I have tutored students from grades 6 to 12 in many focus areas: reading comprehension, writing, SAT preparation, AP exam preparation, and state assessment preparation. I have helped students improve their reading fluency and comprehension skills, earn higher grades and scores on assessments, and improve their writing abilities in a variety of genres. Above all, I have helped to build students' confidence in their reading and writing abilities and helped them understand the importance of literacy in our 21st century. Within my ten years of experience, I have engaged in many professional development opportunities that have strengthened my skills as a teacher and a tutor. I have teaching certificates in Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. I am also Nationally Board Certified, a certification that is incredibly challenging to receive. I have also led teacher training sessions and am currently a teacher leader and curriculum writer who helps other teachers improve their teaching craft to better impact students.

Hobbies

I love teaching and working with middle school to high school students more than anything. I love seeing a student reach his or her goals and understanding the power of reading, writing, and thinking. When I'm not teaching, I'm usually spending time with my family, reading, or running with my dog.
