Education

I hold a B.A. in English with additional work in Religion and History from La Salle University. I have an M.A. in English with a minor in Women's Studies from SUNY Buffalo. Throughout my career, I have attended professional workshops to deepen my knowledge of pedagogical methods and to learn more about newly-discovered connections between the brain and learning.

Experience

I spent thirty years working as teacher at a Quaker independent school in suburban Philadelphia where I taught students from seventh to twelfth grade. In classes of only 15 students, I was able to know students well and to create differentiated assignments to allow all students to succeed. Now that I have retired from the classroom, I want to continue my work with individual students. My varied experience as a tutor has made me flexible and responsive to what students need. I have helped seniors develop powerful personal essays for college admissions; I have tutored students in English, grammar, reading, history, and study and organizational skills; I have worked with students from China who attend U.S. schools; I have taught a "head start" seminar in Beijing for Chinese students coming to school in America. Tutoring gives me the opportunity to develop a relationship with each student and to fashion an individual learning plan. I have a passion to share my love for books and writing with students. I believe that all students can improve academic skills and discover the joy of writing. As a writer myself, there is nothing more gratifying for me than to see students produce work to be proud of and begin to see themselves in different ways.

I love Shakespeare, opera, and baseball passionately. In fact, I come from a sports-mad closely knit family--five brothers and one sister --which helped me become a fan of all things sports related (except NASCAR). I love the arts generally, and can usually be found with a new book in my hands each week.
