I attended Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania, where I earned my bachelor's degree in English. Now I'm studying for my MA at Columbia University Teachers College. I have spent time with AmeriCorps, where I tutored elementary school students in math and literacy. My intention after graduating with my MA and teacher's certificate are to use my education to work with and encourage students in the middle and elementary school age groups to develop a love and appreciation for literature, which is my greatest passion. I especially enjoy the tutoring relationship, because students really benefit from the individual attention they receive throughout the tutoring process. That way, I can learn more about my student's interests, strengths, and most effective learning styles, which in turn enables me to create individualized lessons that incorporate these factors. By using their own interests, I can help learning be more fun for them, and more interesting, by connecting it to something they already like. One of the most satisfying moments in life is when I'm with a child whose eyes light up in that "light bulb" moment, where they get it. They understand something they've been reaching for. This develops their confidence and inspires them to continue working, which leads to more learning, beginning a cycle of academic success.
