Private tutor in Philadelphia, PA
University of Pennsylvania - MLA, Liberal Arts , University of Virginia - BA, English
Although I have worked as an English teacher for years, I am taking a break from the job while I attend the University of Pennsylvania and complete my master's degree. I also have a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Virginia and experience working as a reporter for a newspaper. I got my start as a tutor before becoming a teacher, as I helped students part-time with math and reading. Once I saw the difference I was making in these students' lives with my one-on-one assistance, I went to Mary Baldwin College to finish my teacher licensure courses. As a teacher, I started off leading an 8th grade English class, while working with students as they prepared for reading and writing tests. Although I really enjoy literature, I find that it's extremely rewarding working with students on their writing, as it allows me to help them to express themselves. I feel like students can benefit greatly from working with a tutor because it provides them with individual instruction, but eliminates much of the pressure that is associated with the classroom. When I'm not teaching or tutoring, I like traveling, watching movies, attending sporting events, running, and reading.
